DOOM: The Dark Ages Demon Bestiary 2026 — How to Counter Every Enemy Type on Nightmare
The Marauder in Dark Ages is not the Marauder from Eternal. I learned this by dying six times in the Blood Swamps while muscle-memorying the Eternal counter pattern. The timing is different by about 0.3 seconds. Here's every enemy type and the fastest way to kill each one.
Fodder demons: resource batteries
Zombies: Headshots kill instantly. On Nightmare, three zombies grabbing simultaneously is dangerous because the grab interrupts dash. Kill with any weapon. Use for chainsaw fuel and Glory Kill health.
Imps: Fireballs travel faster and leap attack now homes slightly. Strafe to dodge fireballs — don't waste dash. One sticky bomb from Combat Shotgun kills them. Packs of Imps require Chrono Strike mid-air to pick off without chip damage.
Soldiers (plasma rifle marines): Hitscan attacks. Cannot dodge hitscan — break line of sight or kill first. ALWAYS priority target. One charged Ballista shot kills through shields.
Gargoyles: Swoop in pairs — one distracts, second hits from behind. Audio cue: screech before swoop. Dash toward them (not away) and meathook with Super Shotgun for instant kill.
Heavy demons: the real threats
Hell Knight: Leap slam now has ground shockwave that staggers even if you dodge the impact. Jump + dash to avoid shockwave. New charge-grab (arms spread, runs at you) is one-shot on Nightmare. Counter: Shield Saw block right before contact — parries grab, staggers for 4 seconds, opens Glory Kill. Fastest kill: Shield Saw parry → Super Shotgun → Ballista → Glory Kill. Under 3 seconds.
Dread Knight: Cybernetic Hell Knight variant with shoulder energy blade that fires horizontal projectiles. Jump over blade (dashing through it still deals damage). 50% more health than Hell Knights. Add grenade after Ballista in the combo.
Baron of Hell: Toughest non-boss demon. New arena-charge attack covers entire arena — cannot outrun it, cannot dash through it. MUST be airborne. Double-jump + dash horizontally to clear hurtbox. Fastest Nightmare kill: Ice Bomb → two Grenade sticky bombs (head) → Super Shotgun meathook → Blood Punch → Super Shotgun → Ballista. About 6 seconds. Without Ice Bomb: 30-45 seconds of kiting.
Mancubus: Flamethrower leaves burning ground for 8 seconds. Arm cannons are weak points — Combat Shotgun sticky bombs (two per arm). Once both arms destroyed: Super Shotgun meathook → Blood Punch for instant kill.
Pain Elemental: Spawns Lost Souls passively every 10 seconds. KILL FIRST. Ballista charged shot to mouth right before it spits — interrupts spawn, deals bonus damage, staggers. Two mouth shots + one Super Shotgun meathook kills.
Arachnotron: Turret now destroyed with one Precision Bolt (Heavy Cannon scope) instead of two. Once turret destroyed, charges with 5-hit melee flurry. Dash backward between hits 3 and 4.
Prowler: Now teleports DURING attack animation, can teleport behind you mid-combo. Audio cue: crackling sound 0.5 seconds before teleport. Dash forward (they teleport behind you). Super Shotgun meathook tracks through teleports.
Whiplash: Whip grab now pulls you through environmental hazards. Stay away from arena edges. Ice Bomb + Super Shotgun kills in one cycle. Without Ice Bomb, whip-grab is one-shot near hazards on Nightmare.
Carcass: Most annoying demon. Energy walls persist 12 seconds (up from 8 in Eternal). Can place 4 walls simultaneously. Kill before anything else. Ballista charged shot to cybernetic eye kills through walls.
Super Heavies: boss-tier demons
Doom Hunter: Sled and torso are separate health bars. Blood Punch sled (one hit destroys). Super Shotgun jetpack 3 times while it hovers. Grounded Hunter = dead.
Marauder: Green flash timing is 0.8 seconds into wind-up (was 1.2 in Eternal). Shoot EARLIER. Now summons Spirit Wolf that attacks independently — kill wolf first with Ballista. Fastest kill: Ballista → Super Shotgun → Ballista. Kills on any difficulty.
Tyrant (Cyberdemon): Spams rockets, charged laser (one-shot on Nightmare), ground slam. Dodge laser sideways (never backward — it tracks forward). Destroy shoulder rocket launcher (3 Ballista shots), then arm cannon (2 Ballista shots). Weaponless Tyrant becomes resource battery.
Archvile: Buffer demon that spawns and buffs other demons. ALWAYS first target. Flame wall is hitscan — break line of sight, cannot dodge. While casting flame wall, stationary for 3 seconds — your damage window. Fastest kill: Ice Bomb → Crucible (one-shots) → if no Crucible: double Frag Grenade → Super Shotgun meathook → Blood Punch → Ballista.
